CCO Wear Plate RFQ Checklist: 8 Specifications to Confirm Before Quotation

2026-08-14

A clear RFQ is the starting point for an accurate CCO wear plate quotation.

Simply specifying “chromium carbide overlay plate, HRC 60, 10 mm” may not provide enough information to determine the appropriate material configuration, manufacturing process or inspection requirements.

For a chromium carbide overlay wear plate, eight specifications are particularly important:

1.Base Plate

The base plate provides the structural support for the CCO overlay.

The RFQ should specify:

Base plate material grade

Base plate thickness

For example:

Base plate: Q235B, 8 mm

The substrate should be specified separately from the wear-resistant layer. A statement such as “14 mm CCO plate” does not indicate whether the required configuration is 8 + 6 mm, 10 + 4 mm or another combination.

For fabricated wear liners, the substrate specification can also affect cutting, bending, welding and installation.

If a project already specifies a particular base material, it should be included directly in the RFQ.

2.Overlay Thickness

Wear plate thickness should clearly distinguish between the base plate and the CCO overlay.

For example:

8 mm base + 6 mm overlay

is more informative than:

14 mm total thickness

The required overlay thickness should be considered according to the expected wear severity, operating conditions, and replacement requirements.

The RFQ should ideally include:

Nominal overlay thickness

Base plate thickness

Total thickness

For customized liners, a drawing can further clarify how thickness is defined in relation to holes, bends, or machined areas.

3.Hardness

Wear plate hardness is one of the most commonly specified properties of CCO products.

The specification should clarify:

Required hardness range

Test method

Measurement location

WODON's conventional CCO wear plates generally cover approximately HRC 58–65, depending on the product grade.

However, hardness should not be treated as the sole indicator of wear performance.

The actual performance of a CCO overlay also depends on the wear mechanism, carbide structure, matrix characteristics, overlay thickness, and operating conditions.

For this reason, a more useful specification is:

CCO wear plate for severe sliding abrasion, overlay hardness HRC 58–65, 6 mm overlay.

rather than simply:

HRC 60 CCO plate.

4.Chemistry

The chemical composition of the overlay is an important part of the material specification.

Depending on the grade and application, relevant elements may include:

Carbon (C)

Chromium (Cr)

Manganese (Mn)

Silicon (Si)

Niobium (Nb)

Molybdenum (Mo)

Tungsten(W)

Carbon and chromium are particularly important in CCO because they contribute to the formation of chromium carbides within the hardfacing layer.

The required chemistry should be specified when a project has an established material standard.

Otherwise, the RFQ can request the supplier's typical chemical composition for the proposed grade.

This allows the composition to be evaluated together with hardness, microstructure, and the intended wear condition.

5.Welding Process

The welding process used to produce the CCO overlay should also be confirmed.

Common processes include:

Open-arc hardfacing

Submerged arc welding

The process can influence deposition characteristics, surface profile, production efficiency and applicable overlay configurations.

For a quotation, the specification can simply request:

Welding process: Supplier to confirm

For technically demanding projects, additional information may be required regarding the deposition process or applicable product grade.

The welding process itself should not be used as a standalone quality indicator. What matters is whether the resulting overlay structure and properties are suitable for the intended application.

6.Plate Dimensions

The dimensional specification should be clear and consistent.

A typical RFQ should include:

Length

Width

Base plate thickness

Overlay thickness

Total thickness

Quantity

For example:

Size: 1500 × 3000 mm

Configuration: 8 + 6 mm

Quantity: 20 pcs

If additional fabrication is required, it should be included at the quotation stage.

Typical requirements include:

Cutting

Drilling

Countersunk holes

Bending

Stud welding

For non-standard wear liners, a 2D or 3D drawing is usually more useful than dimensions provided only in text.

7.Flatness

Flatness becomes particularly important when CCO plates are used as fitted or bolted liners.

This can be relevant to:

Chute liners

Hopper liners

Conveyor liners

Fabricated wear components

If a project has a specific flatness requirement, it should be stated clearly in the RFQ.

For example:

Flatness: ▱ 2

Where no project-specific tolerance is required, the applicable manufacturing tolerance can be confirmed with the supplier.

Defining flatness in advance helps avoid installation problems after delivery.

8.Inspection Requirements

The inspection scope should be agreed before production.

Depending on the application and project requirements, inspection may cover:

Plate dimensions

Base and total thickness

Overlay thickness

Flatness

Surface hardness

Chemical composition

Surface condition

Visual inspection

The required documentation should also be specified where applicable.

For example:

Hardness test report

Chemical composition report

Certificate of conformity

Project-specific inspection documents

For a standard replacement liner, a basic dimensional and hardness inspection may be sufficient.

For larger mining projects, the inspection scope should be clearly defined as part of the technical specification.

A hardfacing wear plate RFQ does not need to be complicated, but it should be specific enough to avoid different interpretations.

For a customized chromium carbide overlay wear plate, including the operating conditions and a technical drawing can further improve the accuracy of material selection, fabrication, and quotation.
